In December 2021, I was approached by renowned fashion photographer, Michael Creagh, to design a couture gown made from recycled plastic for Miss Universe 2021, Andrea Meza of Mexico. I saw it as an opportunity to explore the infinite possibilities of sustainable fashion.

The Challenge
Faced with an overwhelming pile of recycled plastic sourced locally from a Brooklyn recycling facility, I had my work cut out for me. I used conventional techniques to form a bustier to Ms. Meza's body measurements.
I gradually built upon it until a truly unique ballgown emerged. (The skirt was so big that I had to finish it in the hallway outside of Creagh's studio.
I was honored to have this piece included as part of Ms. Meza's final editorial shoot as reigning Miss Universe. Below are images of the dress photographed by Creagh for the Miss Universe 70th Anniversary Digital Photobook with IMG.
Once the photoshoot was over, the dress went back to the recycling facility leaving almost zero carbon footprint!
